Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that provides long-term relief from chronic sinusitis.
At Memorial Village ENT, Dr. McCutcheon performs balloon sinuplasty using an advanced 3D navigation system to provide real-time image guidance to your sinuses throughout the procedure. This enables him to get the balloon to the diseased sinuses safely and precisely.
Your sinuses are lined with membranes that produce mucus. The mucus normally drains through a small opening and flows into your nasal passages.
When allergies, a virus, or bacteria cause inflammation inside the sinus cavity, the swollen membranes block the opening. As a result, mucus becomes trapped and you develop an infection called sinusitis.
Sinusitis typically gets better within four weeks, but sometimes the sinuses stay inflamed after the infection heals. When symptoms such as nasal congestion, pressure around your eyes, and a thick discharge last 12 weeks or longer, you have chronic sinusitis.
Chronic sinusitis is initially treated with medications, but many patients find that their symptoms don’t improve with conservative care. That’s when Dr. McCutcheon may recommend balloon sinuplasty.
Before your initial examination, the team at Memorial Village ENT asks you to complete a validated questionnaire called the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22).
This quick and simple survey allows you to rate your symptoms, giving Dr. McCutcheon valuable insight into the severity of your sinus problems.
Dr. McCutcheon uses an advanced 3D navigation system to perform your balloon sinuplasty using a flexible balloon catheter. After giving you a local or general anesthetic, Dr. McCutcheon guides the catheter through your nostril and into the infected sinus cavity.
Once the catheter is in place, the doctor inflates a small balloon in the sinus opening and cleans it with saline water. While the balloon is inflated, it gently restructures and widens the sinus passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.
After the balloon is deflated and removed, the sinus stays open and normal sinus drainage is restored.
Since balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that opens the sinus cavity without needing to cut or remove tissues, the procedure causes less postoperative discomfort and has a lower complication rate compared to other types of nasal surgery.
Balloon sinuplasty also has a faster recovery time. Most of Dr. McCutcheon’s patients can return to their normal activities within two days.
